Working from home can be convenient, but a poorly arranged workspace can place extra strain on the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Long hours spent looking down at a laptop, sitting without proper support, or working from a couch, bed, or kitchen table can contribute to stiffness, muscle tension, headaches, and persistent neck pain.

Why Working From Home Can Cause Neck Pain
Many home workspaces were not designed for prolonged computer use. When the monitor is too low, the chair does not provide adequate support, or the body remains in the same position for hours, the muscles and joints of the neck may become overloaded. Forward-head posture and rounded shoulders can also increase strain over time.
Use a Proper Desk and Chair
A dedicated desk and supportive chair can help keep the spine in a more neutral position. Adjust the chair so your feet are supported, your lower back has adequate support, and your shoulders can remain relaxed while working.
Keep Your Monitor at Eye Level
Positioning the monitor too low encourages repeated or prolonged neck flexion. Raising the screen closer to eye level can reduce the amount of time spent looking downward and may help decrease unnecessary strain on the neck and upper back.
Take Regular Movement Breaks
Even with a good workstation, staying in one position for too long can contribute to neck and upper-back stiffness. Stand up, walk around, gently stretch, and change positions throughout the day to reduce prolonged strain.
Be Mindful of Phone and Laptop Use
Looking down at a phone or laptop for extended periods can increase stress on the neck. When possible, bring devices closer to eye level and avoid holding the head in a forward or downward position for long periods.
When Neck Pain Persists
If neck pain continues despite changes to your workstation or daily habits, a proper evaluation can help identify whether muscle tension, restricted joint movement, posture, disc irritation, or another condition may be contributing to your symptoms.
